What is Naturopathic Medicine?

A very brief explanation to a complex topic

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is a primary health care provider, much like your family Medical Doctor (MD), but with a different perspective on health and a diverse scope of treatment. As Naturopaths our initial visits range from one to two hours in order to address the entirety of your case as all aspects of life are related to health and disease. Our main goal is to empower and motivate you to take responsibility for your own health while we act as a teacher and guide along the path to alleviate any form of dis-ease that may be present. Through modalities such as diet & lifestyle counseling, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicines, homeopathy, acupuncture, intravenous therapy, food allergy testing, hormone testing and many more, we slowly work with your body’s innate ability to heal itself to gently restore balance and improve quality of life. In British Columbia we are fortunate enough to be given prescribing rights by the provincial government meaning that we can choose to prescribe certain pharmaceutical medications when necessary or alter doses and medications. This increases our ability to manage an entire case as the primary health care provider, but we strongly believe in integrated care and working together with other practitioners towards the betterment of each patient. In our practice we are able to assess, diagnose and treat any condition and we always refer out when it is beyond our scope of practice but what we see most commonly includes hormonal imbalances, gastrointestinal concerns, chronic pain and fatigue, hypothyroid, diabetes and heart conditions. Naturopathic visits are covered by most extended health care plans. Check with your provider to find out more details.

What do you treat?

We are able to assess and treat any illness. Just like your family Medical Doctor, we are trained as general practitioners and will refer out when the case is beyond of our scope of practice or when the patient may benefit from complimentary treatments. Our goal is to know each patient on a personal level and find what treatments they will respond to best, whether that is from working directly with us or another health professional.

Is it covered by insurance?

Naturopathic visits are only covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) if you are on Premium Assistance at a rate of $23 per visit.

Most extended health care policies cover up to $500 per year in Naturopathic visits. The amount which each plan covers varies, but the majority of plans will include Naturopathic care.

Recently we were given the privilege to bill any Great West Life or Desjardins policies directly to make it much easier for the patient. If you are not sure if your plan covers Naturopathic visits please contact your insurance provider to find out more information.

What treatments do you use?

Naturopathic Doctors have access to a wide range of treatments. The modalities that we most commonly use at our clinic include:

Diet and lifestyle counseling

Nutritional supplementation

Acupuncture

Herbal medicine

Diagnostic laboratory testing

Intravenous (IV) therapy

Homeopathy

Prescription pharmaceuticals
