What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disorder seen in general practice, representing 30% to 50% of all referrals to gastroenterologists. Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of the large intestine with no evidence of accompanying structural defect making it a diagnosis of exclusion or, in other words, it cannot be explained by routine tests.

Symptoms of IBS often include:

    •  Abdominal pain

    •  Altered bowel function, constipation, and/or diarrhea

    •  Hypersecretion of colonic mucus

    •  Dyspeptic symptoms (flatulence, nausea, anorexia)

    •  Anxiety or depression

    •  Heartburn

The digestive tract is quite complex and IBS can be linked to many different causes making it difficult to pinpoint to exact triggers of the symptoms. Also, each individual case of IBS differs greatly from the next so it is important to consider and test for each cause. Some of the most likely sources leading to IBS are stress, food sensitivities and imbalance of gut bacteria. Of utmost importance is a detailed health history which helps determine the best course of action with regards to treatment and further testing.

Lab tests that can be useful to determine the cause of IBS include:

·         IgG Food Allergy Test

·         Comprehensive Digestion and Stool Analysis

·         Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth Breath Test

·         Betaine HCl Challenge

·         Adrenal Profile

·         Genetic Test – MTHFR

·         Nutritional Profile

Once the cause of IBS has been determined treatment typically involves lifestyle changes to diet and exercise, nutritional supplements and herbs used to remove any harmful bacteria or yeast in the gut and heal the lining of the large and small intestines.

Gastrointestinal disorders are commonplace in our practice and we have had great success with helping to alleviate the causes and symptoms of these disorder.

Really glad to see that you guys shared this post about IBS this month. This isn't a medical condition that gets discussed that often, and it's not one that many people are apt to look into. Thus there are many cases that go undiagnosed for long periods of time causing at the least confusion and sometimes debilitation.

Great read. My best friend told me that she's experiencing constant bouts of diarrhea, and this has badly affected her productivity. I had no idea that these are one of the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is a gastrointestinal disorder. I'll share this with her and suggest that she visit a doctor for treatment.

I liked that this post explained that irritable bowel syndrome treatment usually applies lifestyle changes which means having exercise and diet. My cousin thinks she has acquired an IBS. She better consults a specialist first so she can get the best treatment for her.
